If you run a plant, yard, farm, or facility where accuracy and cleanliness both affect your bottom line, you've probably asked at least one of these questions. We get them from aggregate operators, waste haulers, manufacturers, farms, and municipalities across Eastern and Northern Ontario every week, so we pulled together the ones that come up most and answered them the way we'd answer them on a service call. 1. How often should a commercial or industrial scale be calibrated?

At minimum, once a year. That's the baseline most manufacturers and service providers recommend, but "once a year" is a floor, not a ceiling.

Your actual interval depends on a few things: how heavily the scale is used, what kind of environment it sits in, and how much risk a small error creates for your business. A truck scale running dozens of loads a day in a dusty, vibration-heavy yard is a different animal than a lab balance used a few times a week in a climate-controlled room. High-volume operations often benefit from checks every three to six months, while lower-use equipment can sometimes stretch to annual service without issue.

A few situations call for calibration outside your regular schedule, regardless of how recently it was done:

  • The scale was dropped, overloaded, or took a hard impact

  • It was physically moved to a new location

  • Temperature or humidity around it changed significantly

  • Readings have started to look inconsistent or "off"

If you're not sure where your equipment falls, that's a normal question to ask your service provider, and a good one to ask before you assume once-a-year coverage is protecting you.

2. What are the warning signs that a scale is losing accuracy?

The most common signs are inconsistent repeat weigh-ments, a scale that reads differently depending on where the load sits on the platform, visible physical damage, and complaints from customers or downstream partners about weight discrepancies.

Scales rarely fail all at once. They drift. A truck scale might start reading a few kilograms light. A platform scale might show a slightly different number every time you weigh the same object. Corrosion, worn load cells, moisture in a junction box, or a shifted foundation can all cause this kind of slow slide away from accuracy, long before the scale throws an error code or stops working outright.

Other signs worth paying attention to:

  • The scale fails its own internal self-check or zero-return test

  • Readings change noticeably when the load is placed off-center

  • You've had a recent impact, overload, or extreme weather event

  • It's been longer than your last certification interval and you genuinely can't remember the last service date

None of these mean panic. They mean it's time for a service call before the small drift becomes a costly one.

3. What does Measurement Canada certification actually require, and does my business need it?

Measurement Canada sets the standards and carries out periodic inspections, with intervals that vary by industry and application. Retail and general commercial trade scales are typically inspected on a longer cycle, while higher-risk sectors like fishing and food are checked more frequently. A scale that's outside its allowed tolerance, or one that was never certified in the first place, puts your business offside with federal law, not just out of spec.

This is also where a lot of confusion happens. Calibration and certification are related but not identical. Calibration checks and adjusts accuracy. Certification is the official confirmation, backed by an accredited provider, that your scale meets the legal standard for trade. A scale can be freshly calibrated and still not carry a valid seal if the work wasn't done by someone accredited to issue one.

4. What actually happens during a scale calibration or certification?

A technician tests the scale against known, traceable weights across its full range, not just a single point, then adjusts or documents the results and applies a seal confirming it meets legal tolerance.

For a smaller platform or bench scale, this might mean applying certified test weights at multiple points (empty, mid-range, and near capacity) and confirming the readout matches within the allowed margin at each stage. For a truck scale, the process is bigger: test loads are moved across each section of the deck, since a large scale can be accurate in the middle and off at the corners. Technicians check linearity, repeatability, and shift, then correct anything that's drifted before sealing the unit.

Once everything checks out, you get documentation showing the test results and the certification seal, which is your proof of compliance if Measurement Canada or a customer ever asks. If something doesn't check out, that's the point of the visit, catching and fixing the issue before it becomes a compliance problem or a customer dispute.

5. What actually happens if you run an inaccurate or uncertified scale?

Three things, usually in this order: your margins take a hit, your compliance risk goes up, and eventually, your customers notice.

An inaccurate scale doesn't just risk a fine, though that's real too, it quietly costs you money every single day it's off. Underweighing outgoing product means you're giving away material you didn't get paid for. Overweighing incoming loads means you're paying for more than you received. Neither shows up as one big number. It shows up as margin that erodes a little at a time until someone finally asks why the numbers don't add up.

On the compliance side, operating outside Measurement Canada standards can mean fines, failed inspections, and in more serious or repeated cases, real legal exposure. And if a customer catches a weight discrepancy before you do, that's a trust problem that's much harder to fix than a scale is.

The businesses that treat calibration as routine maintenance, not an annual box to check, are usually the ones that never end up dealing with any of this.

6. How often should an industrial facility or equipment be power washed?

Most facilities benefit from a professional cleaning at least once a year, but two to four times a year is common for operations with heavy traffic, outdoor equipment, or exposure to dust, mud, salt, or product residue.

Eastern Ontario's climate makes this a bit more demanding than it might be elsewhere. Road salt and slush in the winter, pollen and mud in the spring, and dust or grime buildup through a busy production season all add up. Yards, loading docks, aggregate sites, and equipment exteriors tend to need attention more often than office buildings or low-traffic areas.

A few things that push a site toward the higher end of that range:

  • Heavy vehicle or equipment traffic

  • Outdoor storage or handling of product that leaves residue

  • Proximity to gravel roads, aggregate operations, or unpaved surfaces

  • Facilities that need to stay inspection-ready year-round

If you can't remember the last time your yard, equipment, or building exterior was properly cleaned, that's usually a sign you're overdue.

7. Why does regular power washing matter beyond how the place looks?

It matters most for safety, for equipment lifespan, and for staying ready for inspection, appearance is really the least important reason.

Built-up grease, algae, mud, and product residue create real slip and fall hazards on walkways, loading docks, and equipment platforms, and that risk only grows over time if it's ignored. Left alone, that same buildup accelerates corrosion on metal surfaces and equipment housings, which shortens the working life of gear you've already paid for. And if your facility is ever subject to an inspection, whether that's a safety audit, a customer site visit, or a regulatory check, visible buildup and grime is one of the fastest ways to raise questions you didn't need to answer.

Regular cleaning is cheap compared to the alternative: a slip and fall claim, premature equipment replacement, or a failed inspection that could have been avoided with a scheduled wash.

8. Can power washing damage sensitive equipment like scale platforms, and how should it be done safely?

Yes, if it's done wrong. Load cells, junction boxes, and electronic components on a scale are not built to handle a direct high-pressure blast, and improper cleaning is one of the more common, avoidable causes of scale damage we see.

Water forced into a junction box or seal at the wrong angle or pressure can cause corrosion, electrical faults, or false readings that show up weeks later, often mistaken for a calibration problem instead of the cleaning issue that actually caused it. The right approach uses controlled pressure, the correct nozzle and distance, and an understanding of exactly where the sensitive components on that specific piece of equipment are located.
