The Challenge
A worn truck scale at Waste Management's Trenton site had been slated for replacement for some time, but budget timing kept pushing the project back. Then an environmental issue forced the site to close, and Rose Scale got the call to install a new scale immediately, in the middle of winter, with two weeks to get it done. The old scale needed to come out and a new one needed to go in, including full excavation and new concrete, all before the site could reopen. Winter made every part of that harder. Concrete needs steady, controlled temperature to cure properly, and the build window ran straight through three separate snowstorms, each dropping about two feet of snow, with temperatures hitting as low as minus 30 degrees Celsius.
What Rose Scale Did
The team excavated the site, poured new concrete, and installed the replacement scale on a two-week timeline. To keep the concrete curing correctly in sub-zero weather, the crew used ground-source heaters and insulation, monitoring the site around the clock through the coldest stretches. The team also picked up extra work outside the original scope, additional site concrete and a support structure for the client's hydraulic pump, handled through Rose Scale's own mobile fabrication capability rather than bringing in a separate contractor.
The Result
The job came in on time, in conditions that would have justified delay on almost any other project. Waste Management didn't shop the job out to competing quotes. The new installation left the site with a safer, higher clearance scale that's been easier to maintain since.
