The Challenge
When one section of an aging 80-foot truck scale at LaFarge's Canifton quarry physically failed, the obvious answer was a full replacement. The problem was budget approval for that wasn't available, and a new scale at the time carried a roughly 12-week lead time the operation couldn't easily absorb. Two of the scale's three sections were still structurally sound, which meant a full replacement would mean paying for two sections that didn't need it, on a timeline that would leave the quarry without a working scale for months.
What Rose Scale Did
Instead of a full replacement, the team repaired the two intact sections and fabricated a new replacement section for the one that had failed. That approach came in at roughly half the cost of a full scale replacement, with a turnaround of three to four weeks instead of twelve. While on site, the crew also excavated and rebuilt the surrounding area, which had degraded over years of use, and oil-undercoated the scale to extend its service life going forward.
The Result
LaFarge got a working scale back in weeks instead of months, at a fraction of full replacement cost. The relationship has continued since, with Rose Scale handling regular calibration, testing, and service calls at the site.
